International Trade is Critical to Understanding Global Sustainability

This presentation, by Dr. Tom Hertel, Professor of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University and Executive Director of the Center for Global Trade Analysis, helped set the stage for the CAPI “Dialogue on Trade and Sustainability of the North American Agriculture and Agri-food Sector”. His presentation presented insights from the recent literature and laid out a framework for thinking about future developments in trade and sustainability, which Dr. Hertel has used extensively in his general equilibrium modelling of the land use and environmental impacts of productivity improvements and trade in developing countries. He concludes that sustainability analysis is fundamentally an interdisciplinary challenge.
