Healthy Agricultural Soils: A Simple Solution to Climate Change and Resilient Agri-food Systems?
Adopting soil conservation practices in agriculture could help ensure the long-term productivity of our land and increase the resilience of our agricultural systems, while helping mitigate climate change by promoting soil carbon sequestration in soil. Is this a silver bullet, or are there any trade-offs between yield, soil health and carbon storage in soil? While highlighting the inherent complexity of agroecosystems, the results of this study by 2020-2022 CAPI Doctoral Fellow Marie-Élise Samson (in English and French) provide a baseline to help better understand and quantify the different ecosystem services provided by agricultural soils under various management practices in field-crop production.
