Is Canada in an ag innovation crisis?
Canada’s agricultural research and development (R&D) system has driven prosperity for decades. Today, however, it faces significant challenges. Public funding is declining, research efforts are fragmented, and incentives often fail to align with production and societal needs. At the same time, external forces—climate change, global trade tensions, and rapid technological shifts—are reshaping demands on agriculture in ways that stretch the system beyond its current capacity.
This webinar, in partnership with RealAgriculture, explores the challenges facing Canada’s agricultural R&D system, whether it is time to reconsider the status quo, and envisions what a 21st-century ag innovation system looks like and what it will take to get there. The exchange begins with a conversation between Kelvin Heppner, journalist and broadcaster at RealAgriculture, and Ömer Kaya, CEO of Global Advantage Consulting. This is followed by a panel discussion moderated by CAPI’s Managing Director, Tyler McCann, featuring:
- Dr. Angela Bedard-Haughn, Dean and Professor, College of Agriculture and Bioresources, University of Saskatchewan
- Darcy Pawlik, Executive Director, Wheat Growers Association
- Elisabeta Lika, Research Associate, Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute
